I am reading a poem -- ISA-- by the wonderful Chairil Anwar, and he writes: "mendampar tanya: aku salah"
Is "mendampar tanya" a Malay or Indonesian idiom, or is he being poetic and saying something like: "The question is cast ashore: is it my fault?" PLEASE HELP!

It's not the sort of language you use in daily Malay conversation (or any idiom I ever heard of). However, poetic literature and songs lyrics in both languages are almost indistinguishable. In my opinion, I would definitely go for poetic prose.
p.s: isn't ISA the poem in the famous movie "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta ?" I could be mistaken though.

Hi bukhrin-- Thanks for the info. I haven't seen the movie Ada Apa Dengan Cinta--but the poem is characteristically powerful and wild, as most of Chairil Anwar's poetry seems to be. This is the poem:
Isa
Itu Tubuh mengucur darah mengucur darah
rubuh patah
mendampar tanya: aku salah?
kulihat Tubuh mengucur darah aku berkaca dalam darah
terbayang terang di mata masa bertukar rupa ini segara
mengatup luka aku bersuka
Itu Tubuh mengucur darah mengucur darah

Well, too bad he died too young. 27 or 28 something, not so sure.
